Atlas Mountains Travel Guide
The Atlas Mountains run across Morocco for more than 2,000 kilometres, separating the Atlantic plains from the Sahara. The High Atlas, rising behind Marrakech, holds North Africa's highest summit, Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), along with green valleys, terraced fields and mud-brick Berber villages where daily life still follows the seasons. It is the easiest escape from the heat and bustle of the city.
The Best Valleys near Marrakech
- Imlil and the Toubkal National Park: about 1 hour 30 from Marrakech, the base for walks to villages like Aroumd and for the Toubkal trek.
- Ourika Valley: about 1 hour away, a river valley with riverside restaurants and the Setti Fatma waterfalls.
- Asni and the Kik Plateau: wide views, Saturday market in Asni and quiet farm villages.
- Ouirgane: a peaceful valley with lakeside lodges, good for a relaxing night.
- Tizi n'Tichka: the 2,260 m pass on the road to Ouarzazate and the Sahara, with the Glaoui kasbah of Telouet nearby.
Berber Culture
The Amazigh (Berber) people are the original inhabitants of North Africa. In the Atlas, many villages still build with rammed earth and stone, terrace their fields and gather at weekly souks. Visiting a family for mint tea and bread baked in a clay oven is one of the warmest experiences in Morocco.
Hiking and Trekking
The High Atlas offers everything from gentle half-day walks between villages to multi-day treks. The classic challenge is the ascent of Toubkal, usually done in 2 or 3 days from Imlil with a certified mountain guide. In winter, snow covers the high peaks and the route requires crampons and experience.
When to Go
Spring brings almond and cherry blossom and green fields; summer is pleasantly cool compared with Marrakech; autumn has clear skies and walnut harvests; winter brings snow to the peaks and cold nights.
Where to Stay
The valleys have charming mountain lodges and guesthouses built in traditional style, some with spas and terraces facing Toubkal. A night in the mountains is the best way to enjoy the silence and the stars.
