Morocco Travel FAQ: Private Tours, Planning and Practical Tips
Straight answers to the questions our travellers ask most, from how a private tour works to what to pack for the Sahara. If yours is not here, send us a message and our team in Marrakech will reply.
Planning a private tour
How does a private tour with Morocco Lux Tours work?
You travel only with your own family or friends, in a private vehicle with a Moroccan driver-guide who stays with you for the whole trip. We plan the route, book your riads or hotels, the desert camp and local city guides in places like Fes and Marrakech. Because the tour is private, you set the pace: start later, stop for photos, or skip a museum for an extra hour in the souks.
Can I change one of your published itineraries?
Yes. Our tour packages are starting points. You can add nights, swap cities, combine two routes, upgrade hotels or add experiences such as a hot-air balloon flight over Marrakech or a cooking class in Fes.
How much does a private Morocco tour cost?
Our published private tours start from $1,300 per person for 8 days and from $2,200 per person for 18 days. The price per person depends mostly on group size (two travellers pay more each than a group of eight), the season and the hotel level you choose. Each tour page lists prices by group size.
What is included in the price?
Private transport with fuel, your expert driver-guide, hotels with breakfast and dinner, a night in a desert camp with breakfast and dinner, a camel ride and local city guides. Flights, lunches, entrance fees and tips are not included.
Which cities can a tour start from?
Our tours start in Casablanca, Marrakech or Tangier, the three main arrival points. We can also begin in Fes, Agadir or Rabat on a tailor-made trip, and meet you at the airport or port when you land.
How far ahead should I book?
For spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), the most popular seasons, plan two to four months ahead to get the best riads and desert camps. In quieter months a few weeks is often enough.
The Sahara desert
Where do your desert tours go?
Most of our trips visit the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, the highest and most photogenic dunes in Morocco. From Marrakech it is a long drive, so we break it up with nights in the Dades Valley or Todra Gorge and stops at Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. See our Sahara desert tours.
What is a luxury desert camp like?
You sleep in a private tent with a proper bed, and in luxury camps an en-suite bathroom. Evenings include dinner, Berber music around the fire and a sky full of stars, followed by sunrise over the dunes.
Is the camel ride suitable for everyone?
The ride to camp is short, usually around an hour at a slow walk. If you prefer not to ride, we can take you to camp by 4x4 instead.
Practical travel information
When is the best time to visit Morocco?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring warm days and cool nights. Summer (June to August) is very hot inland, and the desert can reach 45°C (113°F). Winter (December to February) is mild on the coast but cold at night in the desert and the Atlas Mountains. Read more in our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
Do I need a visa for Morocco?
Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia can usually visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. Rules change, so always check with your government before you travel.
What currency is used in Morocco?
The Moroccan dirham (MAD). It can only be exchanged inside Morocco, so change money or use an ATM on arrival. Cards are accepted in most hotels and larger restaurants, but you will want cash for souks, cafés and tips. More in our article on Morocco's currency.
Is Morocco safe for tourists?
Morocco is one of the most visited countries in Africa and is generally safe for travellers, including families and women travelling together. Take the usual city precautions with bags and phones. Travelling with a private guide also keeps unofficial guides and touts in the medinas at a distance. See is Morocco safe to visit.
What should I wear?
Light, comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees are respectful everywhere and keep the sun off. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the cobbled medinas, a scarf for dust in the desert and a warm layer for desert nights.
Can I visit mosques in Morocco?
Most mosques are open to Muslims only. The main exception is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, one of the largest in the world, which offers guided tours for visitors of all faiths.
