Chefchaouen Travel Guide
Tucked between two peaks of the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen is the most photographed small town in Morocco. Its medina is washed in every shade of blue, from pale sky to deep indigo, and life moves at a gentler pace than in the big imperial cities. Founded in 1471 as a fortress, the town later welcomed Muslim and Jewish families from Andalusia, whose influence can still be seen in its tiled roofs and whitewashed walls.
Why Is Chefchaouen Blue?
Nobody agrees on a single answer. Some say the colour was introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s as a symbol of the sky and heaven; others say it keeps houses cool or repels mosquitoes. Today, residents repaint their walls regularly, and the blue has become the town's identity.
What to See and Do
- The blue medina: wander the stairways and alleys with no plan; the quarters near the top of the town are the most photogenic.
- Outa el-Hammam square: the heart of town, with cafes facing the red-walled kasbah and the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque.
- The kasbah: a small museum, gardens and a tower with views over the rooftops.
- Ras el-Ma: the spring at the edge of the medina where locals still wash clothes and wool.
- The Spanish Mosque: a 30-minute walk uphill for the best sunset view over the town.
- Akchour waterfalls and God's Bridge: a beautiful half-day hike in the Talassemtane National Park, about 45 minutes away by car.
Shopping
Chefchaouen is known for handwoven wool blankets, Berber rugs, leather goods and local goat cheese. Prices are generally lower and selling is more relaxed than in Marrakech or Fes.
Photography Tips
Come early in the morning, before 9am, when the light is soft and the lanes are empty. Be respectful: many residents do not want to be photographed, and some streets are private doorsteps rather than public spaces.
How to Get There and How Long to Stay
Chefchaouen is about 3 hours from Tangier, 3 hours 30 from Fes and 4 hours from Rabat. One night lets you see the town in the evening and early morning, when it is at its most magical; two nights give time for the Akchour hike.
